曹洞宗の大本山の一つである總持寺は、瑩山禅師によって石川県に開創されました。
当時は千三百余か寺の法系寺院を擁す大伽藍を誇っておりましたが、明治31（1898）年4月13日夜、本堂の一部より出火、フェーン現象の余波を受けて猛火は全山に拡がり、慈雲閣・伝燈院を残して伽藍の大部分を焼失してしまいました。
明治38年、本山貫首となられた石川素童禅師は焼失した伽藍の復興のみならず、宗門の現代的使命の自覚に基づき横浜への移転を決定します。
明治40年3月に官許を得、成願寺境内地の寄進により建設工事が進み、明治44(1911)年11月5日、遷祖式が行なわれました。

遷祖式が行われた年から今年で丁度100年目。
ということで、御移転100周年報恩法会が行われてきたわけです。

石川禅師が横浜への移転を決定した理由の一つには、当時横浜が海外への玄関口であったということが大きな要因となりました。
曹洞宗の教えの根幹である「禅」は世界中に広がり、どっしりと根付いています。
御移転100周年報恩法会にも多くの海外からの参加者がありました。

5日間の法会を全て随喜された、アメリカからの参加者（ここではJさんとします）から感想レポートを戴きましたのでご紹介いたします。

As Daihonzan Sōjiji celebrates its first century in Tsurumi, I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in the five days of ceremonies that commemorate the occasion. It is not everyday that one is able to watch history in the making, I am grateful for the chance to be at Sōjiji as the temple finishes its first hundred years and begins its second.

These ceremonies are also an opportunity for Sōjiji to show its gratitude to the many people whose efforts over the last century have enabled the temple to survive a catastrophic fire, to reestablish itself in Tsurumi, and to thrive in its new home. For those who are not familiar with Sōjiji’s history, this has been an opportunity to learn about those who have contributed to Sōjiji. For those who know Sōjiji well, these few days have been rich with significance and meaning. I was happy to see the descendants of the Maeda family and the community of Jōganji being invited on behalf of the contributions that their ancestors made to Sōjiji. Likewise, I was moved to see how the memories of previous generations of priests and abbots who shaped Sōjiji are still being honored by the community at Sōjiji today.

For myself, the most powerful ceremony was the one performed on behalf of the victims of the earthquake and tsunami of March 11. On such a celebratory occasion, it was very significant that a ceremony for the victims this disaster be scheduled so early in the program. In its history, Sōjiji has been no stranger to tragedy. Indeed, throughout much of the last hundred years, the priests at Sōjiji have done much to care for the victims of disaster, both natural and man-made. As I joined the assembly in offering incense to the victims of the disaster, my mind flew back to that horrible day in March. I mourned for all those who lost their lives and loved ones. At the same time, I felt a sense of gratitude for all those who were rescued, and those who were kept safe.

As I did so, it seemed to me that there was no better place than Sōjiji to pray to ease the pain of those who are still suffering, and to wish for a bright future for everyone.

私は非常に幸運にも、大本山總持寺が鶴見に移転して1世紀の節目を祝う5日間の報恩法会に参加する機会を得ました。
この總持寺が、これまでの100年から、次の新たな一歩を踏み出した歴史に立ち会うことが出来たことを感謝します。
御移転報恩法会は、大火災から鶴見の地で再建し、発展していったことに係る多くの功労者に対する報恩の謝意を示すものです。大本山總持寺の歴史に詳しくない人にとっては、總持寺に寄与した功労者たちについて学ぶ機会となり、よく知っている人にとっては、重要な意味合いを持った行事が盛り込まれていました。前田家の子孫や、成願寺の檀信徒が、先達たちが總持寺に貢献してきたことを代表して招待されるのを見ることができて感激しました。
私は總持寺を築きあげていった禅師、僧侶たちのこれまでの100年の記憶が、現在總持寺に関る人たちにどのように尊敬されているか確かめるためにアメリカから参加しました。

特に心に残った法会は、3月11日に発生した東日本大震災の地震、津波で犠牲となられた方への追悼法要でした。
5日間の法会の中で、真っ先に東日本大震災被災物故者追悼法会が営まれました。祝賀行事の中にあって、それは非常に重要なものです。
過去100年の歴史の中で、總持寺の僧侶たちは、さまざま災害に際し被災者支援のために多くのことを行ってきました。

私は、追悼法要に参加して被災物故者に焼香を行った時に、心は３月のその恐ろしい状況に思いを馳せました。そして、生命と家族を失ったすべての人々に哀悼の意を表しました。
同時に、私は、命を救われたすべての人々に対する感謝の心、そして安寧の心を感じました。追悼法会は、未だに苦しんでいる人々の痛みを和らげ、全ての人々への明るい未来を祈る一番の場所であったように思われました。
